Thinking about next summer already…?

It may seem early to be talking about next summer already, but for those of you planning on working for charities or volunteer schemes abroad (or simply looking forward to an exotic holiday!) then it is never too early to plan for your summer. This extends beyond deciding what clothes to pack; preparing for your holiday should include checking what holiday vaccinations you need and where to get them from! Lucky for you, we have complied this (although far from comprehensive) guide for your summertime travels…

Sanitation

  • Always carry around hand sanitiser and tissues! These can prove invaluable when riding on dirty subways or grabbing food on the go from vendors.
  • DON’T drink water from unfamiliar sources. If you are not sure if the tap water in an area is safe to consume, it is best to drink bottled water. Or bring along your own means of Ciltering/cleaning water, such as iodine tablets.
  • Wash your hands frequently. Hand washing is the most effective way of preventing diseases.

Vaccines/Medication

  • Note: various areas around the world have different endemic diseases, and it is essential to ask your doctor about the specific vaccines or medications you should be taking. Pertussis, polio, hepatitis, yellow fever, meningococcus, tetanus, and diphtheria are just a few of the diseases for which immunisations are provided.)

    • Consult your doctor 2-3 months before your travel departure date. It is important to ensure that there is enough time to provide all the necessary vaccines.

    • DO make sure you are up to date on all your childhood vaccines. These include vaccines such as ones for MMR (measles, mumps and rubella) and for hepatitis A/B. You may or may not have received all of these in childhood, so remember to conCirm with your doctor.

    • DON’T leave prescription refills to the last minute. Make sure you bring enough of your regular medications to last your trip.

    • DO bring diarrhea medicine. Your body often needs a few days to adjust to the local food and temperature, so you are especially vulnerable to any infectious agents present in water
