St Andrews’ Society for Homelessness (STASH) – Fall/Winter 2014 Update

St Andrews’ Society for Homelessness (STASH) is a brand new society set up this year dedicated to homelessness outreach in Fife and Dundee. Fife has the third largest homeless population in all of Scotland. We aim to volunteer at local food banks, collect food and clothing donations and raise funds for shelters. In semester 2 we hope to raise awareness in St Andrews of the homelessness situation surrounding us through a series of talks with Medsin.

So far, our first semester has been very successful. Our first social gave us a chance to meet and get to know the other members of the society, while informing them of our aims and plans for the near future. We hosted a talk with Dr Neil Hamlet, ‘Homeless Health – the Inside Story’. Dr Hamlet brought with him a variety of guests who had experience working with members of the homeless population, and all who attended found it both interesting and informative.

We have many plans for the rest of this year including volunteering trips that all of our members can get involved in. Earlier this semester some of our committee members helped out at the Trussel Trust Dundee food bank, and this is definitely something we plan to do again with the other members of STASH, along with trips to various other food banks, soup kitchens and other organisations that we may be able to help.

If you are interested in getting involved with STASH and any of our volunteering opportunities, or just want more information, please feel free to drop us an email at stash.sta@gmail.co.uk, and like our facebook page ‘STASH’, where we post information on everything we are doing!
